At the end of February, around sixty people gathered in a valley in Miterdale, Eskdale, for a tree planting day run by People Plant Trees, a Cumbria-based CIC focused on tree planting and habitat restoration. Pupils from Gosforth Primary School took part alongside teams from NSG Environmental and Sir Robert McAlpine. By the end of the day, roughly 3,000 trees were in the ground.
We put in £500 to help make the school’s place on the day possible. It’s a small amount next to what came out of it: 3,000 trees that will be part of that valley for a lot longer than any of us will be around to see.
We take our ISO 14001 commitments seriously, but that’s not really why we backed this initiative. We work in energy, nuclear and advanced manufacturing, sectors that talk a lot about the UK’s move to a cleaner future. It matters to us that our own actions back that up, not just our paperwork.
Cumbria is where we’re based. Putting something back into the landscape, and into the young people growing up here, mattered to us.
